Synopsis
When fiddler Tyrane Percival chokes to death on a chicken bone in a West Virginia barnyard, his young protégé, Eldridge Brewer, takes it pretty hard. Looking through his old friend’s personal effects, Eldridge discovers that the sad-eyed loner had once loved a beautiful woman who had died young, breaking his heart. A letter from the woman’s dying father offers Tyrane a place in the family grave, next to his beloved Leona. Unfortunately, that grave is “a hundred thousand miles” away in Louisiana.
Eldridge’s family is too poor to pay for a decent burial in West Virginia, never mind in Louisiana, but he is bound and determined to find a way to reunite Tyrane with Leona, the love of his life.
Enter the handsome stranger, Felton Haliday, a banjo player from Tyrane’s old band. Estranged for twenty years after a jealous rivalry for the beautiful Leona, Felton turns up hoping to make up with his old friend only to find him dead. There’s only one thing he can do for Tyrane now: he’ll take Eldridge and Tyrane’s body to Lousiana in his green 1959 Studebaker pickup.
With Tyrane in an inflatable “kiddy pool” filled with ice to keep him fresh on the journey, the two new pals set out. A flatulent dog named Whistler completes the crew.
But Leona’s uptight brother does not want “that jailbird” Tyrane resting in his family grave and does all he can to stop it, with hilarious results.
Red Evans tells his funny, touching story of reconciliation and forgiveness with warmth and charm and a lot of down-home wisdom.
